Skoon litter is an all-natural litter made of diatom pebbles that are manufactured using a low heat-thermal activation process. The porous pebbles and their manufacturing method create a high rate of absorbency along with being virtually dust-free and hypoallergenic.
The size of the pebbles almost completely eliminate tracking outside of the litter box, and the non-clumping formula reduces the amount of scooping that needs to be done compared to clumping litters.

How We Tested:
- We purchased three varieties of cat litters that Skoon has to offer
- We spent multiple weeks testing the litters on several cats
- We did not receive these products in exchange for a favorable review, they were purchased with our own money
Brand Overview
Skoon is a more unique and unusual litter compared to most litters on the market. Its diatom pebbles are made from diatomite boulders, which after they are mined, are broken down into pebble-sized pieces. During the manufacturing process, the dust is removed and fragrances are added to the scented litter varieties.

One variety of Skoon Cat Litter is the unscented formula. Michael Vogelsang / Cats.com
The end result is a highly absorbent formula that is not only hypoallergenic, but is also biodegradable, organic, and helps to alleviate unwanted odors.

Another variety of Skoon Cat Litter is the lavender-scented formula. Michael Vogelsang / Cats.com
As for its benefits for cats, the pebbles may be larger than more traditional clay litters, but the pebbles themselves aren’t sharp or jagged and won’t be uncomfortable on your kitty’s paws. Also, the larger sized pebbles all but eliminate tracking and scattering outside of the litter box.

What Kinds Of Litter Does The Brand Offer?
Skoon litter offers three varieties for their original pebble formula – unscented, lavender-scented and lemon-scented. All three of these varieties are made using the same ingredients and manufacturing process, with the exception of the lavender and lemon formulas that contain added fragrances for additional odor control. Also, all three of these formulas are non-clumping litters.
All three Skoon cat litter formulas offer the following benefits:
- Made from all-natural ingredients
- Dust-free formula
- Hypoallergenic
- Biodegradable
- Non-clumping
This litter is different than many other litters on the market due to its ingredients and manufacturing process, and its uniqueness contributes to its outstanding absorbency, as well as its eco-friendly approach.
One of the upsides to Skoon is that since it’s very absorbent and non-clumping, it reduces the amount of time and effort you have to spend scooping out your litter box. Also, since the pebbles are so absorbent, you won’t get a lot of mushy or sludgy areas at the bottom of the box. However, due to its non-clumping formula, Skoon isn’t the best when it comes to feces. It’s great at absorbing urine and containing the urine odors, but not so great with fecal matter.
Also, the cost of Skoon is a bit higher than other available litters, but it does last for a long time before having to be dumped out altogether.
Skoon also offers a fine grain formula, but this review focused on the original pebble varieties.

Positive Reviews
“It’s the only litter one of my cats will use. I have three boxes in the house (two automated and one free-standing w/ Skoon). I tried a different litter and he started using the rug in my bathroom to pee on. sigh.
Contains the urine very well. The odor control is great for a couple of weeks. When it starts to smell, change it with fresh granules. The product does what it claims.” –by Douglas R York II, reviewing Skoon Unscented Cat Litter on March 22, 2025
“Love this stuff. Easy to scoop poop and there isn’t an odor from the litter if you follow directions.” –by PD reviewing Skoon Lavender-Scented Cat Litter on September 24, 2024
“Easy to clean just scoop poop once a day and stir. By two weeks smell of urine more prevalent but did not turn seem to affect cats use of pan.” –by Deborah Sataloff reviewing Skoon Lemon-Scented Cat Litter on February 15, 2023
Negative Reviews
“DON’T BUY THIS PRODUCT. Skoon cannot guarantee delivery of the product that you actually order- two months in a row, they shipped me a different litter than the one that I ordered because they are out of their supply and not admitting it. Customer service reps would rather cancel your account than connect you with a supervisor. None of the litters work anywhere near as well as they claim they do anyway. Walk away from this product.” –by Patrick Dunican, reviewing Skoon Unscented Cat Litter on March 11, 2025
“Dusty, horrible stench, hard to sift, tracks all over the house & I will NEVER waist my money on this again!” –by Jamie Allen reviewing Skoon Lavender-Scented Cat Litter on February 3, 2025
“Very expensive for 1 small bag that didn’t even make it through 1 week. I think I’ll stick to the clumping stuff. My cat just pooped on top and refused to cover with this litter. I really hate the smell of cat box but my cat is indoor only, so I have to maintain one. I was really just hoping to find something that locks in oder and is absorbent. It gets scooped 3 times a day but he just would not cover it with this material.” –by Jacquelyn Gammey reviewing Skoon Lemon-Scented Cat Litter on March 29, 2023
How Much Does Skoon Cat Litter Cost?
Skoon Cat Litter May seem a little more expensive than many other litters out there, but it’s also long-lasting, and its hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly formula make it worth the extra cost.
All of the Skoon formulas that we reviewed cost the same at $3.49 per pound. It may seem a little pricey compared to most traditional litters, but Skoon is long-lasting, highly absorbent, and environmentally friendly.
Overall, Is Skoon Cat Litter a Good Choice?
We have a lot of positive things to say about all three varieties of Skoon that we reviewed. Ultimately, all of the varieties did very well with only a few downsides. And, the downsides really depend on your personal preferences.
Between the three Skoon varieties, the only difference was with the scents. Whether it’s the unscented, lavender-scented or lemon-scented, they all have the same properties as far as absorbency, scoopability and lack of dust.
That being said, be mindful of what scents might work best for you and your cats, how much you want to spend on your litter, and how important the environment is to you.
Where Is Skoon Litter Sold?
Skoon Litter is primarily sold online through Chewy and Amazon, but is also available to purchase from other retailers.
The skoon litter really is great. The problem is they can’t seem to handle the supply and demand. I’ve been a faithful customer for a long while. I get 3-4 bags shipped every month. All of a sudden no litter!! I email and get -here’s your tracking number/ well that does no good when they haven’t given the litter to fed-ex. It’s been since March 21st. No reply. No litter!! I c as my wait a month to change litter boxes. So now I’m going to have to find another litter. I have no choice. Sad. Poor customer service.
Have you guys tried their fine grain litter?
We’ve tested quite a few, which one are you thinking about?
You may as well get regular sand litter. It’s cheaper and you’ll be happier. Not only does the fine grain track as much as regular litter, Skoon cannot guarantee their stock so they are currently filling subscriptions with whatever they have at hand. This has been going on for 2 months now. Walk away from this company.
Yes! It’s too dusty for me! I prefer the original.
Skoon litter has literally changed my life! It doesn’t track, which is a huge plus. It doesn’t stick to my long-haired cat. As long as you stir it every day it absorbs urine very well, and solid waste is easy to scoop out. I love not having to scoop out bags of gross cat pee! Paired with easy to clean stainless steel litter boxes, I’ve finally found a winning combination!
